Why is dental hygiene important?

Dental hygiene is important because your oral health can affect your overall health. Gum disease has been directly linked to other health concerns, such as heart disease.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

A regular hygiene appointment usually includes a close examination of your teeth and gums by your dentist, as well as a professional cleaning by your dental hygienist. It may also include diagnostic procedures as required, such as x-rays.

During the appointment, your dentist and hygienist will identify any issues and make a plan to treat them and prevent any future issues.

How can my dentist tell if I have gum disease?

We use soft tissue management to help you prevent issues and maintain oral health. During your routine dental hygiene check-up your hygienist will check for signs of gum disease. Our team will then develop a personalized treatment plan based on your current status.

How can I treat early stages of gum disease, and prevent it from getting worse?

For patients with a mild form of gum disease, we recommend attending frequent hygiene appointments, deep cleanings, and specialized home care routines, as treatment.

During a deep cleaning, your dental hygienist will scrape away the plaque and tartar around and below the gum line, and smooth out any rough areas left behind through a process called scaling and root planing.
